~ Yellow-breasted Chat ~

While i’m in the Chat room   i’d like to add a few more things about this seldom seen and often heard bird. It is the largest member of the Wood Warbler family and i suspect biggest of all warblers.
This photo was taken at Riverfront Park, Billings, MT about a mile from my home/bird sanctuary. I’m not sure if it’s …

Yellow-breasted Chat ~ Icteria auricollis & the Exxon Gang

Greetings, welcome to Chatville… The Yellow-breasted Chat, male here, is the most aberrant genus in the Wood Warbler Family, according to National Geographic Complete Birds of North America .  Quite secretive in a suductive sort of way they are.

Mr. Yb Chat has got a brood to feed – like this tasty crawly insect, not like the kind that Exxon is trying to feed us; Managing …

Black-billed Magpie ~ Pica hudsonia

The Magpie or maggie as it is sometimes called is not all that easy to photograph… they are not easy to approach as most members of the Corvidae family so i felt lucky to get this older Maggie sitting still for some time.  Taken on one of my personal birding adventures that ended in getting photos of the Ovenbird.
In Jackson, …

Mountain Bluebird ~ Sialia currucoides

All of these pix were taken around the Indian Caves, Billings, MT…i saw lots of Bluebirds but some areas northwest of Red Lodge where i expect to see quite a few were few for sure.

They are just so BLUE… and really quite fun to watch as they snag insect after insect from the air or pounce on them from above.

Interestingly …

Western Wood-Pewee ~ Contopus sordidulus

This Pewee is fairly non-discript, but can be appreciated for its subtle grays ‘n browns and its long flight to South America for more Summer! This picture was taken at Billie’s Place on Rock Creek – near Rockvale, MT
A more exciting pic of the Western Wood-Pewee

This was taken on our Yellowstone Valley Audubon Society (YVAS) birding trip to the Pryor Mtns. …

Least Flycatcher ~ Empidonax minimus

Another Active bird that won’t sit still. Either they are ensconsced in the under brush or move so fast ya can’t see um… this is one of the flighty ones. Though i feel there are times they do sit still for the attention is two-fold and certainly bigger than the sum of it’s parts.

i’m always amazed at the Birders …

Yellow Warbler ~ Dendroica petechia

In this neck of Riverfront Park, Billings, Montana are quite a few different birds. I was out to photograph the illusive Yellow-breasted Chat … good shots of the Yellow Warbler in the wild (where else?) are difficult at best. They don’t hold still for long.
Riverfront Park/Lake Josephine takes a LOT of People pressure ~ well enough but the GREASING/Oil Release into the pristine Yellowstone River just a stone’s throw …

American Dipper ~ Cinclus mexicanus

What a unique little bird in a unique micro-niche of the environment. The American Dipper spends it’s Summer, from birth that begins on the edge of, and in raging melting snow river runoff;  finding it a place of sanctuary rather than impenitrable natural liquid barrier we rational beings see it as.
The sun splashes through onto the Dippers roost, illuminating the succulent lichen colors – wall to …

Cedar Waxwing ~ Bombycilla cedrorum

Needless to say they’re gorgeous. And i know there is a few other Cedar Waxwing pix on this Blog. None quite the Eye Candy these are.
I believe i saw Cedar Waxwings on almost every outing from the banks of the Big Horn River out of Hardin,…>>>>>>> all the way to the Beartooth Mtns, especially, at its Red Lodge, where this digital …

Sora ~ Porzano carolina ~ Breeding male

Hard to believe that this is a ‘Game Bird’ in the Eastern US – i just felt so damn lucky to have Camera in hand failing to get a shot of a Gadwall, that flew – up runs this WTF / Oh My Gawd moment for me; Even though National Geographic Complete Birds of North America edited by Jonathan  Alderfer indicates they …
